Wedding Music 101

Indeed, Kirsten and I are getting married this July! The wedding is not so far away now, and we're making our final preparations...I have taken the lead on getting the ceremony and reception music together. My friends and band-mates from Sun Vow are going to play during the ceremony...while they work out their compositions I have tasked myself with the creation of a four-hour iTunes playlist, to loop in the background during the family reception over the PA at Talaris.

Kirsten and I have talked about music that I might select. She has suggested that I go with soul tunes, songs with mass appeal...for some reason, as I sit here and type this, I get totally intimidated by the idea of making this list. Once I sit down with some CDs and my old laptop this task will seem more "real" to me. Weird...

I generally listen to drone/machine noise music, to vicious heavy metal, all kinds of weird stuff. Now I have to wrap my head around making a list of songs that everyone will enjoy, that people can relax with while talking, eating, etc. Maybe some of the list should include dance music. Salsa music might work...people generally seem to like it, and half my family is Puerto Rican...ah, I'm a terrible dancer, but I have this feeling that I'm going to dance at the wedding, whether I like it or not! :) Kirsten and I have taken some salsa lessons, and I know she loves to move. I need to get over my drek and just get into it...

So comments are welcome...feel free to post lists of what you think would make cool "wedding music."

Let's see, soul/mass appeal, dancing, wedding-themed....

That would be Al Green, of course!

I second the Al Green...

also, there's Astrud Gilberto, Frank Sinatra, Buena Vista Social Club, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Sly and the Family Stone, The Delfonics, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder...

I am on blogger as well - haven't kept up on it much lately, but there's some good archives and I'll get my act together and get more on there soon.

dude, AJ dj'd our wedding and did an excellent job of selecting music that was awesome but inoffensive to the guests that may not have shared our taste. you should give him a jingle. or stop by the kincora. and btw, congratulations on the engagement and i hope your wedding is brilliant!

Hi there brother. Cool blog.
I started one tooo, but can't figure out how to post pictures. How do you? I'm using blogger. Let me know how you are please. Are you and dad getting along any better. Did you see him on father's day? Looking forward to your wedding. keep in touch. I'm a big fan of karaeoke, but you probably don't want that at your wedding. Mariachi is always celebratory music. love you , elisha

Talleyman, I could have helped you with this.

If you want great music for when people are mingling and talking, you go with guitar jazz. Then you can at least play something interesting and people not tuned into music will just hear pleasing guitar notes. Marc Ribot y los cubanos postizos, Dimeola, Maclaughlin, and DeLucia's Friday Night in San Fansiscoo, etc.

If you want people to dance, James Brown has to be the go to guy. James even tells you to get up, get on the scene. like a, like a . . . Parliament's greatest hits can be selectively sampled. you can go only so far into rap like "humpty dance" and maybe some J5.

And if you need to clear the party of the squares, Kool Keith's "sex style" should do it nicely. If someone's singing along with "make up your mind, who you want to pump the butt?" they're probably cool.
